Obituary for Jacob Truett Smith

Our beloved Jacob flies with wings of eagles in Heaven’s glorious landscape. He is surrounded by God’s loving grace and Jesus’ tenderness. Jake joins his mom whom he desperately missed.
Family members waiting at Heaven’s gate for him include his mother, Shrevin Gray Smith; grandparents, Clyde D. Gray, Lois Gray, and Rev. Charles W. Smith; great aunt, Pat Guthrie; and great uncle, Bill Guthrie.
Jacob was a radiology student on track to graduate from A-B Tech in May 2014. His dedication to his studies earned him spots on the President’s and Dean’s lists. He loved school where classmates became his friends. Jake was employed in the Electronics Department at Walmart on Hendersonville Road, Asheville.
Music, art, inspirational musings, books and movies were essential things in his life. From Grateful Dead to Dave Matthews, Jethro Tull to Bob Dylan, Ani DiFranco to Bluegrass, to gospel hymns, were types of music he enjoyed. Jake loved many sports and was an intense Carolina Tar Heels fan, especially basketball.
Jacob’s heart was not only golden, but also tender. He rooted for the underdog, was kind to those who seemed sad and a friend to those without one. Friends say his smile could make a bad day good.
Left behind to celebrate his much too short life are his father, Erwin Smith (Sandy); sister and confidant, Brittany Potter (Lenny); nephew, Bradyn Potter; grandmother, Ida W. Smith; Uncle Bo and Aunt Jan; Aunt Meeghyn Gray; cousin Autumn Rumfelt; and best friends, Samer Hosn and Jeffery Huskins. Also left behind are his pups, 13 year old Emma Sue and 9 year old Katie Ward.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday, September 19, 2013 at 5:00 pm in the Chapel of Harwood Home for Funerals with Rev. B.P. Boyle officiating.
The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
