Perhaps we met about five years ago. I have seen you encourge young teachers to stiffen their backbones and jump in; soon-to-retire teachers to be sure to join NCRSP; and those already retired to get active in our communities for the benefit of others - especially in education. I sat in a school superindent's office as you helped him understand there is support as tough decisions are being made to maintain the quality education already created. On a stormy, blustery early Monday November morning I saw your precious breath momentarily taken away following a meeting in a state senator's local office. You made certain he understood that the success of WNC depends on the quality of its schools and teachers. The state budget must reflect that.

You endeared me as you were enchanted by my husband's voice on the phone. After he succumbed to COPD you graciously permitted me to find seats at meetings for you and Steve where the air was well circulated and cool.

Jane, I am finding comfort in the knowledge that you will watch over us as we continue to work to improve the lives of children and their teachers.
