Arlene Craig, having lived a full and long life of over 100 years, gave up her earthly cares on April 14, 2022. Active and largely independent until the end, she will be remembered for her positive attitude and sharp mind.
Arlene grew up on a strawberry farm in Michigan, graduated from nursing school in 1942, and along with all of her classmates, joined the Army to serve her country during World War II. She met and married a GI, and after the war, lived the life of a military wife, moving often and making new friends wherever she went. Arlene lived most of her adult life in Florida, retiring after many years as an RN. In 2012 she moved to Asheville and spent her last ten years enjoying life in Bella Vista Retirement Community and at her church, Groce United Methodist Church.
Arlene was a skilled bridge player, a gardener, and an avid reader. She had two principles for aging well: 1) keep your quadriceps strong, and 2) don’t hang around negative people. She is survived by her daughter, Pam King, of Black Mountain, and a son, Steve Craig of Philadelphia, and his partner, Carol. She was also loved by her grandsons, Beau of Tehachapi, CA and his wife Jennifer; David of Tucker, GA and his wife Megan; and Matthew of Portland, OR and his wife Catherine. She had five beautiful great grandchildren.
Interment will be at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain, NC and a memorial service will be held at a later date.
