Obituary for Betty June Nelson White

Betty June Nelson White, 92, of Arden, NC, formerly of Derwood, MD, passed peacefully into the presence of Jesus Christ her Savior on April 20, 2022.

Born February 26, 1930, in Long Beach, CA, she was the eldest of four children of the late Norman and Florence Nelson. Betty was a devoted wife of 71 years to Ret. CDR Robert L. White and a dedicated mother to her five children: son Russell White (Sandy) of Memphis, TN; daughter Marilyn Edewaard (David) of Oakton, VA; daughter Susan Spalding (Michael) of Aspen, CO; son Richard White (Portia) of Black Mountain, NC; and daughter Lee Ann Gravitt (Ronnie) of Inman, SC; and an incredibly giving grandmother to twelve grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.

Betty loved being a naval officer’s wife and is to be praised for raising five children, sometimes on her own, as she created a home in every one of the thirteen locations in which they lived. Through the years she well supplied dinners together every night, clean clothes, discipline, proper grammar, and a spiritual upbringing. Though loving the quiet of an empty nest, Betty loved family gatherings, phone calls, and gifting her grand and great grandchildren.

She was a devout parishioner of St. Francis of Assisi in Derwood, MD, and also a faithful attendee with her husband of Fourth Presbyterian Church of Bethesda, MD. Her participation at the Mother of God Community in Gaithersburg, MD brought her to a deeper knowledge of and love for Jesus Christ, her Lord. Over time she became a woman of prayer, consistently praying for her family and others.

Betty enjoyed Red Hat luncheons and a neighborhood ladies’ book club. Purchasing fashion and food, and gifting novelties from QVC became a source of great satisfaction to her. Her “purple sisters” (nurses and aides at Trinity View Assisted Living) became friends, allowing her to more easily accept the departure from her home and life in Maryland. The family is most grateful for these Trinity View caregivers as well as those from Hospice Four Seasons who provided loving care to Betty in these last months of her earthly journey.

A private family burial will take place at the North Carolina State Veteran’s Cemetery in Black Mountain. A service in witness to the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ and in celebration of Betty’s life will take place in Graham Chapel of Christ Community Church, Montreat at 1:00 pm on April 25, 2022. Reverend Richard White of Black Mountain, and Dr. Rob Norris, from Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda, MD, will officiate.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Rockville Women’s Center 12530 Parklawn Dr., Suite 170, Rockville, MD 20852, or to a crisis pregnancy center of your choice.
