Obituary for Charles Richard Fernandez, Jr.

Richard Fernandez passed away on January 28, 2021 at the age of 83 with his wife at his bedside.

Richard was born in Hodge, Louisiana and raised in Plain Dealing. He graduated from Louisiana Technical University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He belonged to the Flying Club at LA Tech and helped design and build the first airplane hangar. He loved flying his Piper Cub and spent many hours flying in his younger years. He enjoyed sharing stories of his flying antics of which there were many stories to be told.

Richard did offshore surveying and bridge and highway construction. Because of his love for automobiles Richard bought an auto salvage yard and ran his own business, City Salvage, Inc. in Shreveport, Louisiana for 25 years. He was proud to be the first person in the salvage business to have computerized inventory.

Richard and Cheryl enjoyed boating, RVing, cruising and seeing the world in their 36 year marriage. He accepted Christ as his personal savior and is now at peace.

Richard is survived by his wife, Cheryl, two sons, a daughter, two stepdaughters, Carrie (Stephen) Sells, Stacey (Richard) Schlief, five grandchildren, Joshua Sells, Sarah (Clayton) Carnett, Samuel, Jonah, and William Schlief, and one great grandchild, Karley Jane Carnett. He is also survived by a half sister, Joy (John) Hicks, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gary and Carol Pierce. Richard was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to thank his family doctor, Robert Barker, Memory Care, Dr. Raab of Messino Cancer Center, and the staff of Four Seasons Palliative Hospice and Elizabeth House, whose tender care provided him comfort in his final days. The family would also like to extend thanks to the Black Mountain Fire Department for assisting him on several occasions when he fell and couldn’t get up.

Memorials may be given to Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry, Four Seasons Palliative and Hospice Care, Memory Care, Christ Community Church, EPC Montreat, NC, or charity of choice.

A private memorial service, officiated by the Rev. Carter Blaisdell, will be held at Harwood Home for Funerals on Tuesday, February 2, 2021.
