Obituary for David Steven Lurie

David Steven Lurie, loving husband, father, and grandfather went to finish his crossword puzzle, play his scratch off’s and read his daily paper in the eternal after-life on February 18, 2021. His heart may have given out on earth, but it continues to beat strong in spirit. Those who knew him, will never forget the sound of his laughter.
David was born on November 19, 1946 in Boston, MA, to Sophie and Robert Lurie. He spent the summers of his early childhood years with his family on Nantasket Beach. When he was age ten, his family moved to Charlotte, NC, where he developed many lifelong friends. David graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1965. He and wife, Dianne Whisnant Lurie, were married for 51 years. In the mid 1970’s David became a father to two sons, Adam and Jay. His love and pride in his sons became his life’s purpose.
As a teenager, he worked with his family in the delicatessen business and stayed in food and beverage for most of his work life. Eventually, he went to work for his lifelong friend Phil Levine at Phil’s Deli in Charlotte. If you visited while he was there, you would have had the opportunity to experience the bigger-than-life, unforgettable personality of David Lurie.
David was known for his loud (often rude) sense of humor. He was a social person, loved to have great conversations and tell as many jokes and stories as possible when he was in your company. Although David’s strong personality could come across as insensitive or rough around the edges, deep down inside, he had the biggest heart and genuinely cared about the well-being of people. He loved attending all his boys’ sporting events and would often be the loudest one in the crowd cheering, sometimes embarrassing everyone around him. In his later years, he enjoyed his weekly breakfast meetings with his old Charlotte friends and spending time with his grandsons. Wanting to be near their children and grandchildren, Dianne and David retired to Asheville a few years ago.
David was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lurie and Sophie Feldman Lurie and brothers-in-law, Kim Whisnant and Barry Sklar. He is survived by his loving wife, Dianne Whisnant Lurie; sons, Adam and Jay (Brittney); grandsons, Aiden and Wilkin; sister, Rozanne Sklar and niece, Cammie Sklar Key (Matt); sisters-in-law, Pam Harrill (Tony), Tracy Davis (Steve), and Teri Whisnant; nephews, Tyler Harrill and Paul Davis and nieces, Lauren Whisnant and Rebecca Whisnant.
Harwood Home for Funerals and Cremation Services in Black Mountain, NC, is serving the family and more information can be found on their website.

Please enjoy this ever-so-kind memory of Mr. Lurie from one of his grandchildren.

"Hello, my name is Aiden Lurie. I'm 14 and live in Asheville, North Carolina. My grandfather David Lurie died today (2/18/21). He had a lot of medical issues, mostly heart-related. He weighed quite a lot, mostly due to fluid from his heart condition, which meant he couldn't go out and do anything. All he could do was sit inside and watch TV. Whenever I was at his house I would walk into his room and most of the time he was watching impractical jokers. I would sit down and we would talk and watch the show. It was one of the few things that still made him laugh. I just wanted to send this as a thank you. Thank you for helping me and my grandpa bond and thank you for making his life more enjoyable."
Thank you, Joe, Murr, Q, and Sal
Thank you to everyone responsible for the production of impractical jokers.
Sincerely,
Aiden Lurie
