Obituary for Dell V. Sumpter

Dell V. Sumpter was born in 1935 to Henry David Sumpter and Nannie Larue Elkins Sumpter in McRoberts, Kentucky. He is preceded in death by his brothers Glendal and Jack.
Dell lived most of his life in Asheville, where he worked as an X-ray technologist at the Veterans Administration (VA) Hospital for 39 years. Before working at the VA, he served in the United States Air Force, as an enlisted service man and later in the reserves. Service to his country was important to him; he also served as the Commander of two American Legion Posts in Asheville. He valued his friends, neighbors, and community. At the time of his death, he was the president of the board of his neighborhood in Ocean Isle Beach.
He enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren. His constantly supportive sister and nieces were very important to him. He loved playing golf, working in the yard, riding horses when he was a kid on the farm, and collecting cars.
Dell is survived by his daughter Cathy Logan and husband, Andy; son Jeff Sumpter and wife, Gudrun; grandchildren, Jamison and Julia; sister Joyce Fields; and nieces Darella and Dottie.
A funeral service will be held in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in his name to the American Legion.
