Obituary for Dr. Wesley (Wes) Myron Clapp

Dr. Wesley (Wes) Myron Clapp went home to his Heavenly Father on Wednesday, December 30, 2020. He was born on December 4, 1927 to Robert and Dorothea Clapp of Ramsey, New Jersey. Wes was predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Virginia V. Clapp, and by his brothers Paul and Stephen Clapp. He is survived by his brother Daniel Clapp, his sister Ruth Doughty, and many nieces and nephews.

Wes graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a B.S. in Chemistry, and from the Rochester Medical School. He completed his pediatric residency and fellowship at the University of Colorado – Denver School of Medicine.

Following his medical training, Wes married Virginia Van Geyt, and together they served as medical doctors in the Wesley Guild Hospital in Ilesha, Nigeria for two years. Wes was a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente in Hayward, California for over 33 years and was named the Physician of the Year in 1997. During his medical career, he also served as a camp doctor for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship’s Ontario Pioneer Camp for ten summers. Throughout his life, Wes hosted weekly men’s Bible study and prayer meetings in his home.

In retirement, Wes served as a volunteer for Mission Hospital, the V.A. Medical Center, Asheville Christian Academy and New City Christian School.

Wes’ life exemplified faithfulness, generosity and prayer for many families, individuals and Christian organizations. He was known and affectionately called “Uncle Wes” by many.

A celebration of his life will be held for family at Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church, 281 Edgewood Road, Asheville, NC 28804.
