Obituary for Elmer McDevitt

Elmer McDevitt, 88, of Swannanoa, passed away on January 1, 2023.

Elmer was born May 9, 1934 in Madison County to the late Shuford and Cindy McDevitt. He retired from Norfolk Southern Railway. He loved to garden, watch birds, and watching the Tennessee Vols and any sport. Elmer enjoyed bluegrass and played guitar, and spoons. He was a people person who loved God, his wife and family.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Dora McDevitt; son, David McDevitt; and several brothers and sisters.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Lois Branson (Don), Tommy McDevitt (Tanya), and Tony McDevitt; sister, Verna Mae Cutshall; grandchildren, Chris McDevitt, Lucinda Williams (Rob), Cody McDevitt, Jennifer Dockery (Mike), Shawn Branson (Elizabeth), Katie McDevitt; great grandchildren, Chance McDevitt, Kyleigh McDevitt, Gage Plemmons, Justin Lewis, Maddison Davis, Adian Davis, Jacob Dockery, Nikki Williams, Bella Dockery, David McDevitt, and Chris Dockery; great-great grandchildren, Haisley McDevitt and Marlee McDevitt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 5, 2023 from 1:00 to 2:00pm at Harwood Home for Funerals and Cremation Services. A celebration of life service will immediately follow at the funeral home with J.T. Vess and Haze Carver officiating. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Park.

Flowers are welcome, but those desiring to make a memorial donation are encouraged to consider St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Boys Town, or WKJV Radio Station.
