Obituary for Evelyn Grey Cauble Goodman

Evelyn Grey Cauble Goodman, 96, passed away peacefully after a period of declining health on December 11, 2022.

She was born in Asheville, NC to the late Emmett William Cauble Sr. and Minne Whitaker Cauble. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Cline, Bill, Charles, and Graham; and sisters, Jean, Martha Ann and Judy.

Surviving is her loving husband and sweetheart, George Carlyle Goodman of the home; her four children, Dianne Artus (Albert) of Arden NC, Michael Calloway (Kathy) of Asheville, NC, Dean Calloway of Arden, NC and Stephen Calloway (Elizabeth) of Mars Hill, NC; daughter of heart, Vickie Bradley (Robert) of Old Fort, NC; six grandchildren, who were each her favorite and her pride; 8 great grandchildren; brother, Dennis Cauble (Judy) of Asheville, NC; and sister-in-law, Irene Taylor of Fletcher NC; her two best friends and sisters-in-law, Judy Cauble and Irene Taylor, whom she loved as sisters.

Evelyn worked at Southern Bell Telephone Co. for 35 years as a service assistant and group chief operator. She retired at age 55 and wanted to help the elderly. She loved volunteering with Meals on Wheels, was a board member and chairman of the fund-raising committee for many years.

She was the first “woman little league" baseball coach in Asheville, after her son Michael volunteered her to coach a team. Showing the boys how to slide into home plate, broke her ankle, but continued coaching with a cast.

Christmas was her favorite time of year. Her family teased her that if it stood still and did not move, she decorated it. If it breathed and moved, it received a gift. She loved to make spiced pecans, candy, cookies and her famous "coconut cake."

Evelyn was a strict disciplinarian with her four children. Teaching them manners, love, kindness, respect for others and to be strong adults. Thank you, Mother. All of our hearts are heavy, but we know we will see you again.

She was a former member of Reed Memorial Baptist Church and until her declining health, attended Beverly Hills Baptist Church.

The family would like to thank her personal physician whom she loved, Dr. Ronald Johnson and the staff of 4 Seasons Hospice, for their loving excellent care.

No services are planned at this time. Memorial donations may be made to Beverly Hills Baptist Church- Music Dept., 777 Tunnel Rd. Asheville, NC 28805.
