Obituary for Gayle Glidden Flickinger

Gayle Glidden Flickinger passed away peacefully in her sleep the night of August 9, 2022.

She was born November 20, 1929, in Detroit, Michigan, the only child of Ralph B. and Anne M. Longmate. Her first marriage, to William H. Glidden, ended in divorce. She married Robert (Bob) K. Flickinger, the love of her life, November 26, 1969. She earned a Ph.D. in education from the University of Akron in 1976 following which she taught education at Plymouth State College (NH), Eureka College (IL), and Illinois State University (IL) before retiring in 1988 and moving to NC. She and Bob enjoyed many years of touring the U.S with their RV and made several trips abroad. She was a faithful member of St. James Episcopal Church in Black Mountain for 20 years and an active member of the community.

Gayle was predeceased by her oldest son, Scott H. Glidden, and her husband Robert K. Flickinger. She is survived by her remaining sons and daughters-in-law: William C. and Janet L. Glidden and Peter L. and Nancy Glidden. Additionally, she is survived by her step-daughters Rae (Flickinger) Spicer and Kae (Flickinger) Karp. She also has 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

There will be a Celebration of Life in Black Mountain later in the year.
