Obituary for Jack Earl Clark

Jack Earl Clark, 80, of Asheville, North Carolina died on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at the VA Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina.

Jack was born on March 25, 1942, the youngest child of Floyd and Helen Clark. He was raised in the Riceville Community in East Asheville, with his siblings Helen “Marie” (Clark) Whitaker and William (“Bill”) Clark, both of whom preceded him in death.

Jack graduated from Charles D. Owen High School in 1960 and joined the U.S. Navy several months later, where he served honorably for four and a half years. While on a weekend leave from the Navy, Jack met Wanda Tilson, a student at Warren Wilson College, on a blind date arranged by Jack’s sister-in-law, Christine Clark. Jack and Wanda went on to be married on November 25, 1964 and remained steadfast in their love for and dedication to one another. Together they have one child, Jackie Clark.

Jack was a deliveryman for Rainbo Bread for over seventeen years. While driving his route, Jack once tossed a honeybun from the delivery truck door to a man who had waved at him. Thereafter, the man often waited in his yard for the delivery truck to pass, and characteristic of his playful and kind nature, Jack would throw a honeybun and a loaf of bread as he drove by. In 1979, Jack began working for the U.S. Postal Service, where he was employed until he retired. Jack especially enjoyed traveling to branch post offices to repair machines, fix safes, and socialize with coworkers.

Jack loved to visit with his friends and family, and always happily welcomed canine guests, too. One of his favorite pastimes was to sit on the deck, talking, sharing stories, and laughing, while watching for bears, foxes, turkeys, or other wildlife to pass through the yard or pasture. Mowing and working with his tractor also made Jack happy, as did turning bowls, and working in his woodshop. He shared many hours in his shop with friends and family and often gave away his creations. Jack’s love lives on in these memories and his handiwork.

Jack was unwavering in his faith in God and in his belief that all things work together for good to them that love God, and who have been called according to his purpose. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church in Asheville, North Carolina.

Jack is survived by his wife, Wanda Clark; daughter, Jackie Clark (Ron Barger); two grand-dogs, Rusty and Greyson; sister-in-law, Sarah Cortez; nieces and nephews, Donna Tate (Paul), Diane Tate, Cindy Rand, Danny Clark, Heidi Clark, Debbie Lunenfeld (Rob), and Robert Cortez; many great-nieces and great-nephews, and friends, who all loved him dearly. He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Helen Clark; his sister, Marie Whitaker; and brother, Bill Clark.

Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 23rd at Trinity Presbyterian Church located at 17 Shawnee Trail, Asheville, NC.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations in Jack’s memory be made to provide meals at ABCCM’s Veterans Restoration Quarters and/or Trinity Presbyterian Church.
