Obituary for Janie Elaine Harmon Owens

Naturalists and artists lost an amazing force in this physical world on May 24, 2022. Born on October 7, 1946, Janie Elaine Harmon Owens transitioned peacefully into the arms of the Lord surrounded by her loving family.

In elementary school, Janie was assigned a wildflower collection project, and her love for wildflowers and all nature’s creatures was born. She continued to educate herself in identifying plants, insects, and birds, and shared her prolific knowledge with so many.

A graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, she was an artistic genius. She created countless masterpieces from paint, paper, clay, wood, yarn, and fiber, most of which she gave to loved ones.

Janie was preceded in death by her parents, Clayton Chandley Harmon and Edna Lane Harmon. She is survived by her beloved husband and life partner of 38 years, Larry Owens and his family, daughter Tracy Smith Edmonds and her husband Nick, daughter Jackie Smith, son Simon Owens and his wife Jessica, sister Anna Helms, sister Helen Harmon Ismail and her husband Hassan, grandson Triston Jaynes and his wife Ashlyn, grandson Titus Edmonds, grandson Thomas Byrd, grandson Willard Byrd, niece Ruth Helms Hudson and her husband Patrick, niece Leila Ismail Wolonick and her husband Jason, nephew Ali Ismail, many beloved cousins in Greeneville, TN, and countless friends she loved like family.

The family will receive friends Saturday, May 28, 2022 from 5:00 to 6:00pm at Harwood Home for Funerals & Cremation Services. A memorial service will immediately follow with Rev. James Lamb officiating.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers we ask donations to be made to the Blue Ridge Audubon Chapter at blueridgeaudubon.org.
