Obituary for Julian Theodore (Tedd) Smith

Julian Theodore (Tedd) Smith, 72, of Hendersonville, NC, died Monday, January 31, 2022, at his home. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all who met him. A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late Ruth Ballard Smith and Shelby Lee Smith. He is survived by Gail Sheldrick Smith, his wife of 34 years; and his brother, Doug Smith (Nancy) of Pinehurst, N.C. Tedd was father to Mary-Catherine Pisano and husband Josh and Shelly Smith Cloninger and husband Jeremy. He was a beloved grandfather to Juliana, Elijah, and Frankie Pisano as well as Griffin and Ellis Cloninger. Tedd also leaves behind a wide array of wonderful friends.

Tedd was a graduate of Owen High School and attended East Carolina University. Anyone who met Tedd never forgot him. He was an eternal optimist. He never met a stranger and was always rooting for the underdog. He treated everyone as a friend and when you left his presence, you always felt better for having been around him. Tedd had a beautiful gift of loving people. He always enjoyed a good joke and story. He enjoyed time with his family above all else. He was a long-time member of the Country Club of Asheville, where he enjoyed golfing and also served on the Board of Directors.

Tedd worked at Beacon and Owen Manufacturing Companies for many years. He was foremost in his knowledge of the textile industry. Tedd served as president of the N.C. Textile Advisory Board. He was most recently working to rebuild the Beacon brand, as he was passionate about the legacy of Beacon and the Swannanoa Valley. Tedd was a member of New Bridge Baptist Church and most recently, since moving to Hendersonville, was attending Mud Creek Baptist Church.

A celebration of life will be Saturday, February 5th at 1pm at New Bridge Baptist Church in Asheville. The service will also be live streamed on New Bridge Baptist Church Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a charity of your choice.
