Obituary for Julius "Glenn" Harris

Julius “Glenn” Harris, 94, of Black Mountain passed away at Mountain Ridge Health and Rehab on Monday, April 5, 2021.

Mr. Harris was born March 23, 1927 in Canton, Ohio to the late Lytle Gwyn and Bonnie Harmon Harris. Glenn served in World War II after being drafted into the Army Air Force in 1945 and was later Honorably Discharged. He worked for Campfield Esso for many years, and later retired as a machinist from Kearfott. After retirement, Glenn occupied his time with various wood working projects and playing multiple musical instruments. He loved his sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Glenn was preceded in death by his wife, Garnett in 2015; four brothers, Ellsworth Harris, Warren Harris, Harmon Harris, and Edwin Harris; two sisters, Thelma Harris and Mildred Winters; and brother-in-law, David Arthur Johnson, who had resided with him.

Glenn is survived by his sons, Allen Harris, and wife Rebecca of Old Fort, and Cecil Harris and wife Gay of Swannanoa; sister, Faye Mayberry of Elk Park, NC; grandchildren, Derek Harris and Lyndsey Harris of Carolina Beach, NC, Anna Harris Vanhorn (Alex) of Denver NC, Andrew Harris of Swannanoa, NC, Jessica Perry (Adam) of Old Fort, NC, Charise Beckham (Ryan) of Hiddenite, NC; great grandchildren, Hattie Jo Vanhorn, twin Vanhorn babies due in August, Isaac, Palyn, and Everleigh Beckham, and Kinley Perry.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, April 10, 2021 at 11:00 am in the chapel of Harwood Home for Funerals with Ryan Beckham officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Please wear a face mask.

Burial and graveside memorial will be held at a later date at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Glenn’s memory to Black Mountain Home for Children.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Amy McCoy Allison who cared for him at home, and the staff at Mountain Ridge Health and Rehab for their care and support of Glenn.
