Obituary for Margaret "Margie" Anna Tyas

Margaret Anna “Margie” Tyas was born January 29, 1932 and left her earthly home for her eternal home on December 27, 2020 at age 88. Margie was born in Philadelphia, PA to Ray and Margaret Hulmes. Those who left before her were her parents, husband Howard, son Bill, and sister Lois.

Margie lived in Houston from the late 40’s until relocating to Black Mountain, NC in 1985. She was a member of Black Mountain Presbyterian Church and loved her church family. She dedicated her life to service and volunteered at her church in many capacities. She spent many years cooking the Thanksgiving and Christmas Community lunches at the church for any who were less fortunate or simply wanted to be with others. This was a ministry that she and Howard began in 1986 until 2015. Margie was active in Church Women United where she served as President. While active, she coordinated events to raise funds for the Women’s Correctional Center Chaplaincy Fund and coordinated the yearly Christmas dinner for WCCC. Margie also volunteered at the Black Mountain Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Thrift Shop, Ten Thousand Villages in Montreat as well as the Montreat Conference Center. Other community involvements included serving as a Board Member of the Black Mountain Home for Children and volunteering in many capacities to raise funds for the home. She was a member and past President of Chapter D PEO in Asheville. In her spare time, she was immensely fond of reading and loved to travel. An avid bridge player, she played with a number of local bridge groups. Margie was a true servant of the Lord. She dearly loved her mountains and the friends she made during her stay here.

She is survived by her son, Howard Jr. (Karen); daughters, Pam Tegge (Ron) and Maggie Tyas, her daughter who relocated from Hawaii to help with Margie’s care. Also left to remember her are five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; a special niece, Debbie Eshelman of Katy, TX; along with numerous nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews.

Margie’s ashes will be interred in the columbarium at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
