Obituary for Margaret Sue ("Peggy") Bound Christy

Margaret Sue ("Peggy") Bound Christy (03/31/31 — 03/20/22) was born to William A. and Sarah H. Bound in West Palm Beach, Florida. After attending Stetson University for a year, she enrolled in the Duke University Nursing School and was a proud “Duke nurse” and maintained lifelong friendships with many of her nursing school classmates. During her last year there she went on a blind date with another Duke student, from Andrews, NC, Bob Christy, and six months later they were married on July 25, 1953 and remained so until her death. She was a loving, loyal and dedicated wife and Bob’s sweetie until the end. They had three sons, Bob Jr., Bill and Dick; Peggy was a dedicated and loving mother who demanded that her sons should be courteous to others, try their best in any endeavor they chose, and learn how to make a bed using squared off hospital corners. Any failure in these regards by her sons was met with stern resistance. Peggy and Bob enjoyed a wonderful life together that centered on family, friendships, and always being devoted members of the Methodist Church when they lived in Asheville, Kannapolis, Weaverville and Black Mountain. They had a strong circle of dear friends, and they treasured and nurtured those relationships. They enjoyed traveling extensively, often with other couples. When Peggy and Bob moved to Kannapolis, NC in the early 80s, Peggy took up the game of golf and she joined Bob in becoming a “golf nut.” Though Bob played the game many more years than she did, she twice scored a hole in one, a feat he never achieved, and which she was known to occasionally mention.

Peggy was MomMom to Drew, Julia, Jean Marie, Bryson, Sarah Margaret, Hanna, Rachael, Kilian and Keelan; she loved her grandchildren fiercely, and could extol their many virtues and characteristics upon request. Peggy also loved her daughters through marriage, Deirdre and Shannon, and maintained a relationship with her ex- daughters-in-law, Joyce and Penny, as well. In addition, she had “adopted” daughters in the Coleman girls, Diane, Nora, Jaine and Kathryn. Peggy had a special love for her Bound relatives, especially Susan Zimmerman, Linda Bound and Amy Bound. She had strong relationships with her Christy family, and was close to her niece and nephews, Karen, Mark, Paul and David and their spouses, and her grand nieces and grand nephews.

Peggy was a strong woman who was an inspiration to many, who loved a good joke and to laugh, who never equivocated on her positions, and who never shied from expressing her opinions. She especially showed strength and resilience in dealing with her many ailments, in particular the early onset of macular degeneration. She will be missed deeply by the love of her life, Bob, her family and friends. She is going to leave a space in many hearts that cannot be filled. She lived a life of consequence, and her death will be noticed; we should all be so lucky.

The family is grateful for all of her medical providers, and especially for the wonderful care she received at the Solace Center.
