Obituary for Max M. Price

Max Manuel Price died on May 15, 2021 at the age of 88 at his home in Black Mountain, NC. Max was the son of Roy Calvin Price and Lillie Laddie Lewis Price, and was born at home in the Chicken Hill section of Asheville on May 12, 1933.
Max was preceded in death by both his parents, his beloved wife Jean Olive Lane Price and by brothers Glen, Ray, Don, and sister Mildred.
Max is survived by his three children: Luanne Carol Howard (Mark) of Goodlettsville, TN, Michael Lewis Price (Theresa) of Mechanicsville, VA, and Amy Lane Vaughn (Kenneth) of Morganton, NC. He loved and was so proud of his four grandsons, David Price, Andrew Price, Brian Price and Evan Vaughn. Max is also survived by his companion Shirley Lewis, who brightened his life.
Max was proud of his heritage as a mill kid from the streets of West Asheville. Max kept up with the “West Asheville Boys” through his entire lifetime, and after retirement they formed a ROMEO group that met weekly to tell old stories. After graduation from Lee Edwards High School in 1951, Max transformed himself through two experiences. Max joined the Army and was assigned to the Army Security Agency in Seoul, Korea. In the ASA, Max met friends that lasted through his lifetime. After Army service, Max enrolled at the University of North Carolina, where he graduated with an Accounting degree in 1957. Anyone who knew Max knew of his great love on all things related to Carolina, and he absolutely loved Tar Heel basketball.
Max was a cost accountant and controller throughout his work career. Early in his career, Max worked around North Carolina in various companies, including many years at Kearfott in Black Mountain. In his later career, Max served as controller for the wood products division of Steelcase in Fletcher for over 20 years. He spoke fondly about the great friends he made through his work relationships over the years.
Max was active in his community throughout his life. As a member of First Baptist Church Black Mountain and First Baptist Asheville, Max served on many boards and committees, and was a Sunday School teacher. Max served on the boards of UNC Asheville and of ABCCM, where he served on the Financial Committee for 27 years, including 7 years as Treasurer. He was a member of the Owen High School Advisory Board. He led activities for the Lee Edwards Class of 1951 alumni committee and his Army ASA veterans’ group.
The family would like to extend appreciation to Dr. Robert Barker, who provided care to Max over many years, and special care to him in the last year.
A celebration of Max’s life will take place on Friday, June 4 at Harwood Home for Funerals & Cremation Services in Black Mountain. Visitation will start at 11:00am, with a service at 11:30am.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to ABCCM, 20 Twentieth Street, Asheville, NC 28806.
