Obituary for Peggy Duncan Gant

Peggy Gant, 90, of Swannanoa, North Carolina passed away on October 21, 2022 at Givens Highland Farms Health Care in Black Mountain, North Carolina. She was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina on February 22, 1932, to Buford and Myrtle Duncan. In 1934, the Duncan family moved to Swannanoa, where Peggy lived for the rest of her life.

Peggy was an active member of Swannanoa First Baptist Church and enjoyed serving in several leadership capacities including the Senior Group where she assisted in the planning of trips and activities for the Seniors. She loved God, her family and friends, travel, and a good game of cards. After spending many years in the garment industry, Peggy and her husband, Tom, established Gant Furniture in Swannanoa, North Carolina, which operated for 27 years where they enjoyed helping their customers and clients. Peggy also helped to create the Welcome Table in Swannanoa, distributing food to families in financial need, and preparing hot meals each week for people who needed nourishment, both for body and soul. She always was ready to serve her church and her community in every way possible. She loved a good “covered dish dinner,” where her specialty was always deviled eggs. However, the activity Peggy most loved was travel. It didn’t matter if she was visiting friends; traveling to other countries such as Denmark, Sweden, England, Ireland, various Caribbean islands, Switzerland; spending the winters with friends in Florida; or going to the Dollar Store … she did all these with equal gusto and enthusiasm. She loved that her nickname was “Peggy Go Gant”.

In 2017, Peggy entered Givens Highland Farms where she was a much-loved resident. She considered Highland Farms her “home,” and entertained the staff with her smile, her wit and encouragement to others.

Peggy was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Riddley Gant in 1999, as well as four brothers: Sam, Carl, Joe and John Duncan. She is survived by daughters, Dianne Gant Cook Lynch (special friend Ray Bauman) of Hendersonville, NC and Naples, FL; Susan Gant Cameron (Bill) of Swannanoa, NC ; son, Roger Gant of Montreat, NC. She also leaves four grandchildren: Matt Cook (Jennifer); Josh Gant (Christine); Duncan Gant (Jennifer); and Carrie Cameron Robinson (Will); as well as seven great-grandchildren: Parker, Hunter, and Ben Cook; Ellic and Blake Gant; and Maddox and Murphy Gant. Other family members include brothers, Robert Duncan and David Duncan (Wanda); brother-in-law, Don Gant (Betty); daughter-in-law Pat Gant; and son-in-law Jerry Cook.

The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to the entire staff and administration of Givens Highland Farms for the outstanding care she received while a resident there. These amazing professionals enriched the lives of Peggy and her complete family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Swannanoa First Baptist Church Senior Group or to the charity of your choice.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Swannanoa First Baptist Church on October 29th at 2:00 pm. Family and friends will be received at the church from 1:00 - 2:00. Private burial will be at Piney Grove Cemetery in Swannanoa.
