Obituary for Phillip Edward Lemond

We are sad to announce the passing of Phillip Edward Lemond, of Black Mountain, North Carolina on Friday, July 29, 2022, at the age of 78, after a three-year battle with cancer.

Born and raised in Charlotte, NC, Phillip graduated from Harding High School in 1962 and attended Calvary United Methodist Church, where he married his wife, Binnie Mulligan, and baptized their daughter, Deanna. Soon after high school, he took a job as a drafter with the Bouligny textile company, working his way up to senior engineer in his nearly 30 years there. Phillip traveled the world in this role, setting up textile machinery he helped design, spending significant time in China, Brazil, and Turkey, among other places. Though he was generally a quiet person in a crowd, he loved to tell stories of these travels.

For many of his working years he split his time between Charlotte and Surfside Beach, SC, where he settled and finished out his career at Thantex, Inc. He lived there, just a few blocks from the ocean, feeding the birds and the turtles at the lake down the street daily, until moving to Black Mountain in 2013 to be with his daughter’s family.

Phillip had a ready smile for everyone he met. He was a lover of good food, little dogs, making or fixing just about anything with his hands, and birdwatching.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow Patrick Lemond, and Mildred Harmon Lemond, and his four siblings, George Lemond, Michael Lemond, Harriet Lemond Costner, and David Lemond, as well as his wife, Binnie Mulligan Lemond. He is survived by his stepsister, Joan Garrison, daughter, Deanna Lemond LaMotte, and his grandson, Mason Bishop LaMotte.

A Memorial Service will be held at Calvary United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC on Sunday, August 21 at 3:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish to make a memorial contribution are encouraged to donate to Mountain Pet Rescue in Asheville, NC.
