Obituary for Robert "Bob" Harold Christy Sr.

Robert Harold Christy, Sr. (“Bob”) (08/27/31 – 10/22/22) transitioned from this life just six months and two days after his beloved Peggy. Bob and Peggy were inseparable, and it is hard to think about them individually without thinking about them as a couple.

Bob was born to John H. and Mary Willie Christy in Andrews, North Carolina. Growing up in a small town surrounded by family and many friends provided a base for him. He followed his brother, John, to Duke University. At Duke, he was the manager on the 1952 Duke baseball team that went to the College World Series. More importantly he met Peggy there, and they were married in July of 1953; they were married almost 69 years at her death in March of 2022. He was a loving and dedicated husband, and the father of three sons, Bob Jr., Bill and Dick. He was a wonderful and involved father when the boys were young, always willing to join in with neighborhood kids in a game of HORSE (which he usually won with a long-range hook shot that he rarely missed), or to go hiking and spend time in the woods. Bob worked most of his career in textiles; he worked in a number of positions at Beacon Manufacturing for many years, and then with Cannon Mills in Kannapolis. He was a veteran of the US Army. He developed many enduring friendships, and especially enjoyed jokes and easy laughter. He never tired of reminding people of his birthday, and feigned indignation at imagined neglect of his birthday. Peggy and Bob enjoyed a wonderful life together that centered on family, friendships, and always being devoted members of the Methodist Church when they lived in Asheville, Kannapolis, Weaverville and Black Mountain. They had a strong circle of dear friends, and they treasured and nurtured those relationships. They enjoyed traveling extensively, often with other couples.

Bob was PopPop to Drew, Julia, Jean Marie, Bryson, Sarah Margaret, Hanna, Rachael, Killian and Keelan; he loved his grandchildren fiercely, and enjoyed all of the time that he spent with them, and always eagerly anticipated their visits. Bob also loved his daughters through marriage - Deirdre and Shannon, and he maintained a relationship with his ex- daughters-in-law Joyce and Penny, as well. Bob had a close relationship with his Christy family, and was close to his niece and nephews, Karen, Mark, Paul and David and their spouses, and his grandnieces and grandnephews.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Black Mountain United Methodist Church or Manna Food Bank. A celebration of life will be held on November 4, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at Black Mountain United Methodist Church.
