Obituary for Hazel C. Hetzel

Hazel C. Hetzel, 82, died on December 7, 2014.
She is loved dearly by her husband, Alan D. Hetzel; by her surviving children, Thomas S. Edwards Jr. (Julie) of Jacksonville, FL, Ginny Edwards of Upperville, VA and Wellington, FL, and Richard Edwards of Christmas, FL; by her stepchildren, Dorn Hetzel (Diane) of Hogansville, GA, and Dirk Hetzel of Arvada, CO; and by her ten grandchildren. Her own love of life and wonder of the beauties of God’s creation live on in all who knew her.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Susan Edwards; by her father, Edwin B. Bridges; by her adoptive father, Byron Crawford; by her stepfather, Fred Woolverton; and by her mother, Hazel Woolverton, nee Hazel Topaz Gwaltney.
Hazel was a graduate of The Bartram School in Jacksonville, FL, of Bradford Junior College in Bradford, MA, of the University of North Carolina and of Candler Theological Seminary at Emory. She was ordained in the United Church of Christ as a pastoral counselor and was a member of the American Association of Pastoral Counselors.
She and Alan moved to Highland Farms Retirement Community in Black Mountain, NC nine years ago, having lived in Highlands, NC for ten years following Alan’s retirement from banking in North Central Florida.
Hazel is deeply loved and remembered by her family and by her many devoted friends. Many were life-long friends and countless more came to love and respect her along the way, especially young people whom she taught and counseled in her professional career. She founded the Motivational Tutoring Service in Jacksonville and was the director of the Disciples-Presbyterian Student Center at the University of Florida. She gave of herself and showed so many the way to see the good in each other, in themselves and in all of God’s marvelous creation.
A memorial service will be held at Highland Farms and private graveside services will be held in Highlands, NC and in Jacksonville, FL at later dates.
Memorial contributions will be honored at Care Partners Hospice at 68 Sweeten Creek Road, Asheville, NC 28803; by the Highland Farms Employees Appreciation Fund at Givens-Highland farms, LLC, 200 Tabernacle Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711 or by charities of choice.
