Obituary for James Thomas Burris

James Thomas  Burris
James Thomas Burris was born on April 28, 1945, in Swannanoa, NC, to the late James Burris and Minnie Sullivan Burris. He passed away November 16, 2015.
James was the oldest of five children, and preceded in death also, by his brother, Caesar "Pap" Burris of Black Mountain, NC. Mr. Burris is survived by two sisters, Pansy Burris of Los Angeles, CA, and Sharron Burris Barnard of Asheville, NC; and one brother, Michael Burris and (Jean) of Decatur, GA; along with the Matriarch of the family, Mrs. Bernice Spencer; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends and especially Ms. Venita Spencer Brown. All of who had a special place in his heart.
James attended Carver Elementary School in Black Mountain, NC; Hillstreet School, Asheville, NC and graduated from Stephen Lee High School in Asheville, NC, where he was the head drum major and also played in the marching band. He loved music, dancing and traveling (especially to Las Vegas). James went on to attend Technical colleges where he received his CNA licenses. He worked in several different capacities of Health Care. He also lived in Los Angeles, CA where he worked in private care for many years; then returned to North Carolina where he worked in Health Care for several Nursing Facilities. James had a very fun loving spirit, was a kind hearted, and caring man for his family and others. Always helping out others when needed. Even in his sickness he wanted to help others.
James joined New Salem Baptist Church and received Christ when he was 12 years old; faithfully attended church no matter where he resided. He helped out with fundraisers for the church cemetery and other needs of the church, created the Sunday bulletins at various times and performed other duties when requested.
A celebration of life service for Mr. Burris will be held at Noon on Monday, November 23rd, 2015 at New Salem Baptist Church, Swannanoa, NC with Elder Herbert Grant officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.
The body will be available for viewing at New Salem Baptist Church one hour prior to the service. The repast will follow the burial in the Church basement.
At other times the family will be at the home of Bernice Spencer, 14 Twin Laurel Branch, Swannanoa, NC 28778.
