Condolences

Condolence From: Jonathan Dudley & Tracie Pouliot
Condolence: Our condolences to Anne’s children and grandchildren, especially those of you we had the chance to meet during out time on the mountainside, particularly daughters Julia and Susan and granddaughter Pearl. Condolences because Anne’s passing seems like the passing of era, but what an amazing person to be able to celebrate and remember.
During our almost two years as Anne’s tenants, we were often Anne’s co-laborers and occasionally her interlocutors, and sometimes her company – and in each case we were touched and moved by her. To be around Anne was to be moved both by her breadth of experience but also engagement with the present - whether that was the literal task at hand on the mountainside that day or the task at hand for people who care about the world and humanity and that moment in history. But while Anne was about the business of now- the chickens, the rhododendron growing out over the road, the e-cake that needed to be baked, her thoughts on how a recent Barbara Kingslover book related to food insecurity, or the Obama campaign, as well as the unique value of the moment- what was in bloom, the special group of people that were present, or the bear that had taken care of the yellow jacket hive for us, she conveyed always by her presence a wisdom and connection to the past that included all the wonderful and terrible changes and events of the previous eight decades.
Under her direction we raked the woods, cleaned the giant window that looked out at the beautiful mountains, gave the silver a polish, and dusted the books in Willis’s study. We raked the woods to make it a little easier for flowers to pop up in the Spring, we washed the windows because it is important to see clearly the majesty that is out there, we polished and dusted because the things we’ve collected and carried forward from the past matter. But while being around Anne reminded us of the value of place and beauty, heritage, and intellect what she emphasized the most was the value of people and relationships. We know there were lots of ways off the mountainside that Anne showed this, particularly through her faith community and her commitment to prayer partnerships, but one of the ways we experienced the importance that Anne put on people and relationships was through her tremendous social grace. This social grace communicated many things, but three things that it communicated about her were: southern, gentle, woman, and this quality of social grace was shown equally in her wonderful way as either a hostess or a guest. She was comforting and inspiring in this way.
I don’t think we can really describe or measure the influence that getting to be around Anne had on us, but it undoubtedly made us better people, a better couple. It was an honor to know Anne, we were lucky to have the time we did with her. And it is exciting to feel a special connection to her great grandchildren Ellora, Emil, and Mayda.

Condolence From: Derek & Clifford King
Condolence: Dear Ones, How loved you all are and are in our prayers to celebrate a life well lived. There is not enough space to share how special a woman she was to us. From the time Derek was a newly ordained priest, she impacted our lives. I remember when Willis died we drove to Berea from Indiana with a toddler and a newborn to be present. There were no hotel rooms so we slept in our mini-van in a rest stop! How I wish we could returm to Asheville or Berea this time, but we are on the trip of a lifetime in Greece and Turkey..thinking of all she taught us about church history and Paul. Please give our special love to Pearl and Virgil. Much love, Derek and Clifford King Harbin of Portsmouth, VA

Condolence From: Fred R. Smith
Condolence: First cousins Burton Harris and Fred Smith, childhood pals of Anne and her brothers Charles and Carol and Sister Alice, send deep condolences and fond memories of Anne.

Today I bought a bunch of pink peonies which rest on my mantel in Eastern Long Island because peonies have always reminded me of that counsinly clan. During the depression 30s, a nothern florist company found land at the site of the Carol Smith family estate in Geensboro , alabama perfect for raising peonies for the eastern market. First peonies any of us ever saw. Perfect for remembering such a lovely and accomplished lady. Fond memories and love to Charles, Alice and the entire extended family. Burton and Fred

Condolence From: Jim Ramsay
Condolence: Please accept Shawn's and my condolences and prayers for comfort. Anne (it is hard for me still not to call her "Mrs. Weatherford") was an amazing person. I think back to the people who had a positive impact on me growing up and she's high on the list. I remember overnights at the house in Berea, youth retreats, time spent at the cabins, hiking (and getting lost) in the NC mountains. She always seemed willing to pour herself not just into her own children, but into all of us tag-alongs as well. For that I am grateful. What an incredible legacy she leaves in the lives of her children, grand children, and great-grand children and in the lives of the many who were impacted by her, including me.
