Obituary for Susan Wingfield Neville

Susan Wingfield Neville
Susan Wingfield Neville died peacefully in her Montreat home August 24, 2016.
Susan was born August 21, 1924 in Augusta, GA to Presbyterians, the late Rev. Dr. William Gordon Neville, Jr. and the late Mary Lindsay Tennent, who were missionaries to Brazil. She grew up in Garanhuns, Pernambuco in North Brazil and Recife, a beautiful port city. She attended the “15th of November” mission school while living in Brazil.
WWII had a significant impact on Brazil and the mission, with a large contingent force of US servicemen in Recife guarding against Axis submarines. Like other young adults, Susan worked approximately two years for the Corps of Engineers as an interpreter.
After the war, Susan attended and graduated from Agnes Scott College in 1948. She went on to earn a Masters Degree in Christian Education in 1951 from PSCE and served as Director of Christian Education for First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville, GA and then Highland Presbyterian Church in Winston Salem, NC. Having served 8 years as a DCE, Susan changed career course and joined a dental practice in Atlanta.
Arriving in Montreat, as the new town was incorporated (1967), Susan served on the town staff as the first tax collector. She later was in property management independently for more than three decades.
Susan was well known in our Montreat community, especially for producing 10 Cottagers Directories between 1971 – 2011.
Susan is survived by her sister, Mrs. Robert Ashlin White (Virginia Aiken Neville); and two brothers, Henry Tennent Neville and Wm. Gordon Neville, III. Other survivors include her sister-in-law, Elizabeth S. Neville, (Mrs. Wm. Gordon); one niece, Mary Elizabeth Neville Martin and husband, Rick Martin of Asheville; and two nephews, William Tennent Neville of Black Mountain and Leverett Chase Neville and wife, Celeste of Rome, GA. Surviving also are two great nephews, Simon and Julian Martin of Asheville; and two great nieces, Sydney and Lindsay Neville of Rome, GA.
A Service of Remembrance will be held at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church, USA on Friday, September 16, 2016 at 3:00 pm.
Memorials may be sent to a charity of your choice.
