Obituary for George Avery Post

George Avery Post
George Avery Post was born in Caldwell, Idaho on December 23, 1923. He was one of seven children born to John Avery and Pansy Morrison Post. He attended schools in Canyon County and graduated from Boise High School where he was their star basketball player.
He was inducted into the Army-Air Corp as a B-24 Navigator and served in the Philippines during World War II. In 1946, he attended Woodbury College in Los Angeles, CA and graduated with a degree in Business Administration.
He began working for the Idaho Air National Guard in 1951 as Comptroller and married Betty Lou Wilson, who died in 1967. One of his great enjoyments in life was flying his Piper Cub plane. He was tremendously talented working with wood. He remodeled many houses and created beautiful furniture and there wasn’t any type of equipment that he could not repair.
He moved to Washington D.C. in 1967 where he was the Director at the District of Columbia Children’s Home. He then went to work for the Pentagon as a Financial Analyst and for EPA Headquarters as a Financial Manager. While living in D.C., he met the love of his life, Dorothy Greenlee Jones, and they spent 50 years enjoying each other’s company and traveling the world.
He was a life-long member of the Masonic Lodge and Shrine. He organized the AARP Regional Instructor Program in North Carolina and worked as an instructor for many years. He loved helping children and teaching them to better themselves. He also tutored the handicap.
Upon retirement in 2004, he moved to Black Mountain. He became involved with three other board members to revive the Original Thomas Chapel AME Zion in Black Mountain. Through donations from the community the historical church was completely restored. George made major contributions to the church and other organizations in Black Mountain.
George died Monday, May 22, 2017 at age 93 at the NC State Veterans Home. He is survived by his companion, Dot Jones of Black Mountain, her daughter, Pat Jones of Atlanta, GA; his daughter, Lee Post of Boise, ID; his brother, Robert Post of Boise, ID and many nieces and nephews.
