Obituary for Eunice Mae Wilhelmi (Berg)

Eunice Berg Wilhelmi, 92, finished her race, laid down her burdens and entered into glory where she was welcomed by her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday night, May 24, 2017. A long-time resident of Montreat and member of Christ Community Church of Montreat, she was predeceased by her beloved husband of over 60 years, Norm; her parents R. Stanley and Myrtle Berg; her brothers Stanley, David and Paul; her sisters Ruth, Miriam and Dorothy; her grandson Mark Haney; and her son-in-law George Haney. She is survived by her children; Jay Wilhelmi (Jeanette) of Pfafftown, N.C., Janet Wilhelmi Haney of Villa Hills, Ky., Cathy Wilhelmi Haney (Jay) of Novato, Calif., Carol Wilhelmi of the home and Scott Wilhelmi (Lori) of Swannanoa, N.C.; and her grandchildren Sarah Haney Jarvie (Chris), Laura Haney, Kevin Haney, Jenna Haney, Jonathan Wilhelmi, Jackson Wilhelmi and Rebecca Wilhelmi.
Eunice grew up in Charlotte, N.C. where she graduated from Central High School. She attended Taylor University where she met Norm before finishing her nursing studies at Queens College in Charlotte. She was a caring wife, devoted mother and dedicated homemaker. Her gracious hospitality complimented her husband’s coaching career and she was beloved by all who knew her. After her children had grown, Eunice was able to resume her nursing career caring for aged veterans at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Oteen, N.C.
Eunice was a wonderful cook. Her pies – apple, blueberry, strawberry-rhubarb – were legendary. After the birth of her first grandchild, Sarah, she rediscovered her love of knitting. She was a master of the craft and the numerous scarves, sweaters, socks and blankets she fashioned were (and still are) treasured by her family.
While we here whom she has left behind morn her passing, we rejoice in Eunice’s “good victory” and in our hope of the resurrection to come. In lieu of flowers or other memorials, please make donations in her memory to Christ Community Church.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at 3:30pm at Christ Community Church in Montreat.
