Obituary for Donald Metcalf

Donald Metcalf
Donald Metcalf, 90, passed away Tuesday, March 4, 2014 at the John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center with his children by his side, after several years of declining health.
A native of Buncombe County, Don lived most of his life in Swannanoa and Black Mountain. He was the son of the late William (Bill) and Kitty Anglin Metcalf. He was preceded in death by brothers, Ralph, Vance, and Arnold (Bud); sisters, Sally Parker, Thelma Ledford and Frances Pulliam; late wife and mother of his children, Lora M. Davis; children, Donald Ray, Johnny, and Martha Metcalf, daughter-in-law, Mary (Sam) Metcalf; great grandson, Baby Zain Wolfe; beloved sister-in-law, Marie Metcalf; and brother-in-law, Bis Ledford.
Don is survived by his beautiful wife, Margaret Byrd Metcalf; daughters, Carolyn Grogan (Alvin) and Peggy Yoder (Ralph) of Black Mountain, and Anita Hawkins (Don) of Asheville; step-children, Mary Wood of California and Robert Byrd of Swannanoa; 6 grandchildren, Derek Hamby whom he cared for as his own, Kelley Yoder Beard, Jason Yoder, Ellisha Parton, Chris and Josh Wolfe; 9 great grandchildren, Dustin, Ashlyn, Zachary, Brycen, Lora, Lexi, Jaden, Sydney and Jax; sister-in-law, Irene Metcalf of Carrollton, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly. He was a wonderful Daddy, Dae, Papaw, Brother, Brother-in-law, Son, Husband, Father-in-law, Uncle, and Friend.
He was a hard-working man with hands of steel and a heart of gold. His protection, care, assistance, guidance, companionship, comfort, kindness, and advice will forever be missed. He was always the “Go To” guy for the entire family. He was always an extremely hard worker and provider for his family. He left Beacon Mfg. Company after 28 years of service and owned/operated the Ideal Package Store in Black Mountain for 24 years prior to retirement. Six of these years, he worked both jobs and provided homes for all his children. To a working man, he was a millionaire.
A Celebration of Dons Life will be held at Harwood Home for Funerals on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 2:00 pm with the Reverend James Lamb officiating. Burial will be at Mountain View Memorial Park following the service. Pallbearers will be Derek Hamby, Josh Wolfe, Chris Wolfe, Jason Yoder, Frank Robinson and Dustin Wolfe.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service time at the funeral home.
At other times, the family will be at the home of Carolyn, 600 Montreat Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711.
The family wishes to express its gratitude to our “Most Special Friend”, Trudi McCall for her kindness and many visits that truly brightened his days; to his best friends, Frank and Carol Robinson for their visits, love and concern; to Karen Hughes for her personal care; and to his doctors and staff for the excellent care for several years, Dr. Robert Uhren, Dr. Richard Dodd, Dr. Brian England and Dr. Roger Domby.
Flowers are appreciated and accepted. Anyone wishing to make a memorial contribution, the family requests that you consider, CarePartners Hospice and Palliative Care or the John F. Keever Jr. Solace Center, PO Box 25338, Asheville, NC 28813.
