I was saddened when I heard the news. My family and I very much enjoyed and treasured the time we were able to spend in Black Mountain four years ago. It brought back memories of early youth spent in a simpler and perhaps better time and place. The Bates family that lived next door: Les, Connie, Danny, Bette, Ellen and Grandma Stone were the best. I am sure that other neighbors whether in Columbia or elsewhere share this view. May God bless you all.
Dr. Bates was one of my favorite teachers at Stephens College. I still remember the last assignment before Christmas break: "Write a paper on your belief or disbelief of Santa Claus", and base your statements on what we discussed in class this semester! He always urged us to think critically and reach our own conclusions. He was The Best!
It was my good fortune to have known Leslie. No doubt he touched many lives during his life.He was full of joy with a love for life and others. He will be missed here on Earth. As another Rev.prayed"Our SOULS are like the STARS IN THE UNIVERSE...they are INFINITE and EVERLASTING ...they go on and on and on an on."
