Charles (Jake) William Hamby, 67, of Black Mountain, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on July 4, 2016. Charles (Jake, as he was known by many) owned and operated Charley’s One in Ridgecrest, which later became A Touch of Art. He was a member of Meadowbrook Free Will Baptist Church in Black Mountain, where he was a former Sunday School Superintendent.
He loved his family, friends and community. He served as Chairman of the Sourwood Festival and President of the local F.A.N. Club (Friends and Neighbors Club), which helped many local families especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas. Charles served in the Navy and was a Vietnam Veteran.
He is preceded in death by his father, William C. Hamby (Bill) and mother, Luna Pleasant Hamby of Swannanoa.
He is survived by his loving wife of 34 years, Deborah Allen Hamby (Debbie); three daughters, Kimberly Osborne (Jeff) of Tennessee, Ashley Greer of Tennessee, and Sarah Hamby of Black Mountain; a son, Justin Greer of Black Mountain; four grandchildren, Alyssa and Megan Osborne, Brennan and Kaylee Greer; a sister, Clare (Tensie) Williams (Raymond) of Old Fort; and many loving nieces and nephews.
A very heartfelt thank you to the doctors and wonderful staff who took the most amazing care of Charles in S.I.C.U. and Hospice at the VA Hospital in Asheville. To each friend and many loved ones who were always here and those who stood by him in spirit, love and prayer, we extend our deepest gratitude.
A Celebration of Life Service will be Friday, July 8, 2016 at 10:00 am at Meadowbrook Free Will Baptist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Burial will be at 12:00 pm at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the VA Hospice in Asheville, NC.
