Lessie Evelyn Cox Jolly, age 96, went to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 20, 2020 after a brief and sudden illness surrounded by her family.

She was born August 13, 1924 to the late Susie Duncan Cox and George T. Cox in Pulaski, VA where she grew up as a child. In 1944 she left to find work at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA as did many a young person during the war. While there, she met the late Jesse C. Jolly whom she married. In traveling back and forth from Virginia to Mississippi when visiting relatives, she and Jesse decided to permanently live in beautiful Black Mountain, NC where they raised their family of three children: Barry C. Jolly of Black Mountain, NC, Kenneth W. Jolly of Weaverville, NC and Susan J. Faw of Old Fort, NC. She was a devoted wife and loving mother, aunt and grandmother. She was a caring friend and neighbor to all who knew her. Evelyn worked briefly at Beacon Mfg. and Kearfott before staying at home to raise her family. Evelyn was a devout Christian lady who knew and lived by her Bible. She was a Golden Circle Sunday School teacher at the First Baptist Church in Black Mountain. She also held Bible Studies at her home and led Child Evangelism Good News Club meetings where she led numerous young people to Christ while teaching them the Bible. She loved to work in her flower garden and bird watch.

In addition to her children, Evelyn is survived by her daughter-in-law, Elizabeth B. Williams of Weaverville; five grandchildren: Melody A. Wingfield of Chattanooga, TN, Jonathan J. Jolly and wife Danielle of Bristol, TN, Keri L. Rector of Asheville, NC, Jennifer Hall and husband Dr. Ben of Marion, NC, and Sarah Faw of Black Mountain, NC. She was also blessed with five great grandchildren: Winter Wingfield of Chattanooga, TN, Sara Beth and Aiden Jolly of Bristol, TN, Athen J. Lee of Black Mountain, NC, and Charlee K. Hall of Marion, NC, and another great grandchild on the way. Further surviving relatives include Benjamin Cox of Prince George, VA and a sister-in-law, Ellen Cox of Richmond, VA, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Evelyn wanted to extend a warm “thank you” to Lisa Veatefeuville, a good friend and neighbor who helped her over the years. She is also grateful to Mike and Cindy Roberts, Bruce and Kathy Ammons, Bruce and Gwenn McTaggart, and especially Kenny Palmer, a close friend of the family.

The family will have a private service at Harwood Home for Funerals & Cremation Services and private graveside service for the family will follow at Mountain View Memorial Park in Black Mountain. In lieu of flowers, Evelyn has requested that donations be given to a charity of your choice.
